How to sell boring stuff like life insurance

|
April 11, 2008

If you can be successful at marketing some of the most boring products in the world, then imagine how easy it will be for you to sell everything else!

Let’s practice.

Suppose you’ve just opened a small branch to sell life insurance - does it get more boring than that? You’re desperate to show the big wigs that you can hold your own, and you have a couple of eager employees, a small budget, and 3 months to prove yourself. What do you do?

Let’s have a quick brainstorm of what you can do/create:

  • Life expectancy quiz
  • Online life insurance calculatorĀ
  • Customer referral program, e.g. Get another $5,000 of insurance free for every referral.
  • Article on the most interesting or funniest cases of life insurance fraud.
  • “How much is your life worth? You tell us!” advertising campaign.
  • Hold a hot dog eating contest. The winner gets a check for life insurance and a certificate telling them how much shorter their life will be from eating that junk.
  • Partner with a local anti-smoking group and give away life insurance policies to people who successfully quit. Publicize it.

Ok, so those might not all be great ideas, but you get the point. Creativity usurps budgets and resources every time. If you can successfully market something boring like life insurance, you can certainly sell scrap-booking materials, consulting services, tacos or whatever your business sells.

Give it a go. Be creative and you’ll surprise yourself how successful you can be.
