Dunsity Award: Edelman Public Relations

|
February 11, 2008

This month’s award goes to one of the globe’s largest PR firms, Edelman, for their Global Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Report, whose high handed talk flies in the face of what the firm actually does. I quote from their press release:

“More companies are realizing that authenticity is the key to effective corporate responsibility communications,” said Peggy Connolly, communications director at the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship. “This research reveals the importance of companies being real, relevant, and responsive to key stakeholders—internally with employees and externally with NGOs and others.”

This is nice; this is really nice, but when the news comes from the same organization that not too long ago was caught setting up a phony blog for it’s client at the time, Wal-Mart (more here), the message kind of loses it’s bite. Anyone who has taken an ethics class would know deceiving people for the sake of profits is a big no-no, and according to this latest report, so would Edelman, but that hasn’t seemed to stop them from speaking with a forked tongue.

So congratulations, Edelman, you’re the first recipient of the coveted Dunsity Award.
